AT THE UNDERPASS OF THE SEOUL STATION (서울역 지하도에서)

 

 

 

 

서울역 지하도에서     저기 어떤 분이 날 보고 웃으신다. 아는 분인가 싶어 나도 희쭉 웃어 드린다. 나에게 다가 오셨다. "배가 고파 그러는데 점심 값 좀...?"   양복에 넥타이를 맨 배고픔이다. 오죽하면 그러랴 싶어 도와주고 싶었다. 호주머니에 달랑 3천원이다. "삼천원이면 되겠습니까...?"   그분 안색이 일그러지신다. 왜 그런가 싶어 긴장이 된다. 그분이 입을 여셨다. "내가 거지인 줄 아십니까...?"   ............... ............... 구걸 한 넘이 거지가 아니란다. 구걸 받은 넘이 거지가 되어 버렸다.   저기 "타는 곳" 표지판이 보인다. 오늘은 "나가는 곳"이 유난히 눈에 들어온다. 거절 당한 3천원을 만지작 거린다. "차 한 대 뽑자. 일단 3천원은 마련됐다..."

AT THE UNDERPASS OF THE SEOUL STATION     Over there a gentleman smiles at me. I too smiles at him wondering if I knew him. He came closer to me. "I am hungry. Some money for lunch, please..."   He was a hunger wearing formal suits and a neck tie. I would like to help him understanding his desperate situation. Only 3 bucks are in my pocket. "Is it ok for you with 3 bucks?"   His face is being frowned. I become nervous not knowing why. He opened his mouth. "You think I am  a beggar...?"   .................. .................. He who begged denied that he is a beggar. He who was begged became a beggar.   Over there, the "SUBWAY" sign is seen. Today, the "EXIT" sign is exceptionally clear to my eyes. I am fingering those refused 3 bucks. "Try to buy a car. Now, 3 bucks are ready..."
