BENCH (벤치)

 

 

 

There is a bench in a corner of the play ground.
There were 4 benches for the first time but now only one is left.
The other benches at the good places had come into ends for too much work and were taken out one by one.

At last, the bench took the chance to serve solely people.
Sometimes only poor lovers who wanted to share their hot loves or villains in the town who spat or rubbed cigarettes on it would visit the bench deep in the night but nothing has ever been changed for years.

One day in last summer, a homeless kept sleeping on the bench almost every night.
He had surely come there except in rainy nights and once he had fixed loosened screws of the bench.
His visit was stopped about the time when chilly winds of autumn began to blow.

Today I visited the bench and swept away the snow on it.
I felt that it was stunned guessing the homeless came back again.
I waved my hands saying 'I am not him'.

The bench looked so lonesome.
So I made a snowman and put him on it.
And I whispered to myself facing the bench.

"You've missed him so much. He will be back when summer comes again after the spring..."
"If he may not come back, I will not forget to come to you..."
In the world covered wholly white, three of us were sharing our smiles without a word.

 

 

 

놀이터 한 구석, 벤치 하나가 있다.
놀이터가 처음 지어질 때는 네 개가 있었지만, 지금은 하나다.
몫이 좋은 자리에 놓였던 다른 벤치들은 과로로 일찍 운명을 다 하고 하나씩 뜯겨져 나갔다.

이윽고, 그 벤치 혼자 남게되던 날, 사람들을 독차지할 수 있게 되었다.
하지만, 이슥한 밤 뜨거운 사랑을 나누고 싶은 가난한 연인이나 침을 밷고 담배불을 비벼 끄는 동네 불량배들만 가끔씩 찾아왔을 뿐, 몇 해가 지나도 달라진 것은 없었다.

그러다가 지난 여름에는 한 노숙자가 그 벤치에서 거의 매일 밤 잠을 잤다.
물론 비가 오는 밤에는 오지 않았지만, 그는 어김 없이 그 벤치를 찾아왔고, 언제는 삐그덕 거리는 나사를 죄어주기도 하였다.
쌀쌀한 늦은 가을 바람이 불어올 무렵 그의 발길은 끊겼다.

오늘 나는 그 벤치를 찾아가 위에 하얗게 쌓인 눈을 걷어 주었다.
그 노숙자가 다시 찾아온 줄 알고 그 벤치는 화들짝 놀라는 것 같았다.
나는 '그가 아니다'며 손을 저었다.

벤치가 왠지 쓸쓸해 보였다.
그래서, 눈 사람 하나를 만들어 벤치 위에 올려 주었다.
그리고, 그 벤치를 마주하고 서서 되뇌였다.

"많이 그리워하고 있구나. 곧 봄이 오고 여름이 오면 그가 다시 올꺼다..."
"만약 그가 다시 오지 않는다면, 나는 너를 잊지 않고 찾아오마..."
온통 하얗기만한 세상에 우리 셋만이 말 없는 미소를 나누고 있었다.
